In this video, we will share a few tips on making downsizing easier on your pets.

Moving to a smaller place can be stressful for both you and your beloved pets. Interestingly enough, some folks find it easier to talk about their pets’ stress than their own concerns. No worries, we’re here for all of you!

Here are a few ideas to make the downsizing process easier for your pet:

1. Familiar Setup

Prioritize setting up your pet’s sleeping area, food, water, and litter box in a similar layout as before. This will provide a sense of familiarity and security. We always recommend moving first before putting your home on the market to maintain this comfort. If you hire a professional move manager, let them know about your pet’s routine, and include your pet’s living space in your space plan.

2. Gradual Transition

If possible, introduce your pet to the new space gradually. Start with short visits, gradually increasing the duration. This can help your pet adjust more comfortably. When moving to a senior living retirement community, let your move-in advisor know about your pet. They might introduce you to others who share your love for animals, offering support during the move. And if moving to an apartment complex, familiarize yourself with the pet rules to make a great first impression on your new neighbors.

3. Familiar Scents and Objects

Surround your pet with familiar scents and objects in the new place. Items like their bed, toys, or blankets carrying their scent can provide comfort and reassurance.

4. Stick to Routines

Try to maintain your pet’s daily routines, including feeding, walking, playtime, and regular activities. Consistency can help reduce anxiety during the transition. If possible, have a friend or neighbor pet-sit while you’re busy with the move or getting resettled in your new home.

5. Consult Your Veterinarian

Before the move, consult your veterinarian for any additional advice specific to your pet’s needs. They may provide suggestions, recommend medications, or supplements to reduce stress during the transition. Also, verify that your pet’s immunizations are up to date and update their tags and microchip information with your new contact details.

During this time, patience and understanding are crucial. Moving can be a big change for pets, so showing them love, care, and consistency will help them adjust to their new environment. And don’t forget, self-care is essential for you too! Take care of yourself throughout the process.
