Effective January 1, 2022 new homeowners will be allowed to file for and receive their Homestead exemption on the date of purchase or can file during the year of purchase. Previously, homeowners had to wait until January 1 of the year following the purchase of their home.
Other requirements to obtain a Homestead Exemption:
- The property must be your principal residence and you cannot claim a homestead exemption on any other property.
- You must provide a valid Texas driver’s license or Texas identification card, and the address listed must match your homestead address. (After you move, get your drivers license or ID card updated with the correct address before filing for your exemption).
Homestead exemption forms are available from your county’s appraisal district. Most have them on their website to download. For links to appraisal districts in North Texas, scroll to the bottom half of our Housing Resources page.
