Living Independently Doesn’t Have to Mean Doing It Alone
We talk with older adults all the time who want to remain independent for as long as possible. And we’re all for that! But living independently doesn’t have to mean doing everything alone.
Sometimes it’s the little things—a neighbor who checks in, a family member who calls regularly, or simply knowing that someone is looking out for you—that can provide an extra layer of comfort and security.
That’s why we wanted to share a great local resource we recently learned about: the Arlington Police Department’s AOK Program.
What Is the AOK Program?
AOK stands for “Arlington Are You OK?” The program is designed to check on the well-being of older adults, people with disabilities, those who live alone, or others in the community whose welfare may be a concern.
Through the program, Arlington Police Department volunteers make telephone calls to participants to check on their welfare.
It’s a simple idea, but think about the peace of mind that regular check-in could provide—not only for the person living alone, but also for family members who may not live nearby.
Who Can Participate?
The AOK Program is for qualifying City of Arlington residents. Generally, participants should be 65 or older, live alone, have a working telephone, and have a medical condition that requires them to remain at home or another circumstance approved by the program administrator. Those currently living in an assisted living facility are not eligible.
There can be exceptions based on serious health issues, age and limited family contact, so if you’re wondering whether you—or someone you care about—might qualify, it’s worth asking.
Maybe It’s Not for You—but What About Someone You Know?
This is the kind of resource that’s easy to overlook until you stop and think about the people around you.
Do you have an older neighbor who lives alone? A friend whose children live out of town? Someone from church or a social group who doesn’t have family nearby?
They may never have heard of the AOK Program. Simply sharing this information could make a difference.

At Senior Downsizing Experts, we believe planning for the future is about much more than deciding where you’ll live. It’s also about knowing what resources are available to help you live safely, confidently and independently today.
Know someone who could benefit from the AOK Program? Pass this along. Sometimes being a good neighbor is simply knowing what resources are out there—and sharing them.
